Tribune Co. Looks To Divest Newspapers – 12/12/2012

Scott Capito‘s insight:

After five years of bankruptcy and a seemingly endless legal battle, the Tribune Co. is hoping to sell some or all of its newspapers. It is meeting with bankers to lay the groundwork, according to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with these conversations.

Tribune Co. owns several big metro dailies, including the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and Baltimore Sun, as well as somewhat smaller newspapers including the Orlando Sentinel, South Florida Sentinel and the Hartford Courant. Tribune Co. could choose to sell some or all properties, or divest them separately over time.

If it choses the latter, per Bloomberg, the small pubs would probably go on sale first.

Twitter Counters Instagram, Launches Photo Filters – 12/11/2012

Scott Capito‘s insight:

Take that, Instagram. Only days after Facebook’s photo-sharing network Instagram removed support for posting its images directly into Twitter feeds, Twitter strikes back. With app updates the company is promising for iOS and Android today, Twitter gains the ability to apply filters and do in-app photo editing before posting. The Twitter blog last night announced the new feature and included a demo video.

How Much Money We Spend On Apple Gadgets

See on Scoop.itDaily Content Highlights

More than $444 per year.

Scott Capito‘s insight:

Yesterday, Reuters ran a story about the "Apple Tax." In it, Reuters argues Americans are spending too much money on Apple’s gadgets and accessories. We think it’s a silly story. Apple isn’t forcing anyone to buy its stuff. If people want to buy Apple gadgets, then should be allowed to buy Apple gadgets.

Anyway, one interesting bit in the story comes from Katy Huberty at Morgan Stanley. She has estimates of how much the average U.S. and global household is spending on Apple’s products. We asked her for the report on how much money people are spending at Apple. As you can see, from 2009 to 2011, spending on Apple stuff doubled.

Sporting News Ends Print Edition After 126 Years | Media – Advertising Age

See on Scoop.itDaily Content Highlights

sporting news executives told readers today that the magazine will go all digital on jan. 1, ending a 126-year run in print.

Scott Capito‘s insight:

They had already cut its longstanding weekly frequency back to every other week in September 2008 and again to monthly in November 2011 — when it foreshadowed today’s news by ceasing to accept new subscribers.

"Having spoken with many of our longtime subscribers, we recognize this is not a popular decision among our most loyal fans," said Jeff Price, president and publisher, and Garry Howard, editor-in-chief, in a post on the Sporting News website pointing readers to mostly free content on its website and mobile and tablet apps. "Unfortunately, neither our subscriber base nor the current advertising market for print would allow us to operate a profitable print business going forward."

"Whether it’s sports or news it’s still a difficult proposition to try and be profitable in an ink and paper business," Mr. Howard said in a phone interview. "Digital is where it’s at."
