Asus Windows 7 Slate Tablet

The Asus EP121 is among the biggest slates you’ll see unveiled at the show, boasting a 12-inch screen and weighing 2.5-pounds. By comparison, the Apple iPad runs a 9.7-inch widescreen and weighs a pound less than the EP121. The screen uses a 1,280-by-800 resolution, which is interesting because it’s based on a 16-by-10 aspect ratio that most laptops have moved away from, in favor of a 16-by-9 one.

The Eee Pad Transformer is an Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet with a 10.1-inch, 1280-by-800 IPS touch-screen display. It runs on an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor with support for Adobe Flash, HD video conferencing and playback, and mobile gaming. It includes a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera and 5-megapixel rear camera, as well as a mini-HDMI port for full 1080p video playback. It’s 0.51 inches deep. Asus said the device is ideal for those who want to enjoy multimedia content on the go but still use the tablet for business-oriented tasks.

Ballmer: Windows Tablets by Christmas

While Apple’s iPad runs away with the tablet market, Windows slates are still preparing for battle, with the first wave to appear by Christmas, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said.

7 new Windows 7 tablets

“You’ll see new slates with Windows on them. You’ll see them this Christmas,” Ballmer said at the London School of Economics, Reuters reports. “Certainly we have done work around the tablet as both a productivity device and a consumption device.”

Tablet watchers could get a taste of what’s to come at a Microsoft event next week, on October 11. Although Microsoft intends to focus on Windows Phone 7, unnamed sources tell Neowin that Microsoft will speak briefly about its tablet plans.
