Pubs That Go Digital-Only Face New Requirements

Publishers also will need to report circulation more frequently…

Newsweek might have been the most high-profile magazine to go digital-only, but it’s probably not the last. And so the Alliance for Audited Media—as the Audit Bureau of Circulations has renamed itself—has endorsed new guidelines for print publications that go digital-only.

The new guidelines, adopted at the AAM’s Nov. 14-16 board meeting, say that when a publication makes that transition, it must give subscribers the option of receiving the digital subscription; converting to another print publication; or receiving a refund for the remainder of the subscription.

Pas a Pas: A stop-motion animation tool for the classroom

See on Scoop.itDaily Content Highlights

Ishac Bertran’s Pas a Pas is not only a device for teaching children the fundamentals of stop-motion animation (and a little geometry for good measure); it …

Functionally, the most important aspects of the Pas a Pas are its screen and camera, with which children can create a stop-motion animation with a series of simple steps. The screen displays an arrangement of colored shapes. A child arranges corresponding colored blocks over the shapes, directly on the screen. With the pieces in place, the “record” button is pressed, and the camera above, which points down at the screen, takes a snapshot. The screen then cycles to the next frame of the animation, with the child moving the relevant pieces. So on to completion.

A hamburger made using Momentum Machines’ automated hamburger maker…

Hamburgers are a multi-billion dollar business, and while fast food chains have got the process down to an efficient production line process, making them is still labor intensive with armies of burger flippers and sandwich assemblers. In a move that could put millions of teenagers around the world out of their first job, Momentum Machines is creating a hamburger-making machine that churns out made-to-order burgers at industrial speeds and aims to use it in its own chain of restaurants.

Sailrocket runs 65.45 knots (75 mph) to smash World Speed Sailing Record

See on Scoop.itDaily Content Highlights

The outright world speed sailing record was smashed this afternoon (November 24) by Paul Larsen in the Vestas Sailrocket 2 with the astonishing time of 65.4…

In a spectacular week for sailing, more than a dozen world speed sailing records have been broken at two different venues in Namibia. The outright speed sailing records for both 500 meters (59.38 knots) and one nautical mile (55.32 kts) were set in Walvis Bay by Australian Paul Larsen and the British-designed, inclined-rig hydrofoil Vestas SailRocket 2. Simultaneously, 600 km away, the annual Luderitz Speed Challenge has seen nine world outright speed records for sailboards established in just a week, including surpassing 50 knots (92.6 km/h) and 60 mph (52.14 kts). The breaking of world records is almost certain to continue over the coming weeks, with Larsen focussed on breaking the 60 knot (111.12 km/h – 69.05 mph) barrier and the now legendary Luderitz Speed Challenge continuing until December 16, with kiteboarders joining the event on December 3.
